J&O Fabric of the Week: Crabby Maxine

Have you ever had one of those days where you wake up in a crabby mood? Sometimes the things that we usually enjoy are often even annoying to us in a time like that. For Maxine, that is how she insists on living everyday.

Created by illustrator John Wagner in 1986, his no holds barrred character was designed specifically for the Hallmark Shoebox Greetings card line complete with a head of curly gray hair, the body of an aged but still spunky individual, and the abrasive personality of woman who has found comfort in speaking her truths without compromise. Meet Crabby Maxine, a reflection for some, of the mothers, grandmothers, and elders of their communities, and the serum for almost any case of the blues one might be experiencing at a given moment.

Since her 1986 debut, over 220 million Maxine cards have been purchased, and the numbers have been growing each year. A star in her own right, Ms. Maxine and her dog Floyd’s faces can be seen on everything from aprons, calendars, clocks, and sleepwear, to magnets, kitchen items and now….FABRIC! That’s right, now you can bring Maxine and her curmudgeonly musings back home with you to make your own fun and fabulous creations for when you or a loved one needs a laugh or two.  Available right on our website, our 45″ cotton fabric is the perfect material for custom quilts, pillows, bedding, whatever your hearts imagination.

Simply put by the designer himself, “If Maxine can get a laugh out of someone who feels lonely or someone who is getting older and hates the thought of another birthday, or if she can make someone chuckle about stressful interpersonal relationships, then I’m happy. Putting a smile on someone’s face is what it’s all about.”
