It’s been a while since we’ve shared the talents and creativity of one of our crafty customers with you, but we’re back on track with a young woman from Watertown, NY and her handcrafted dolls too.
Known by her customers as the ‘Owl Lady’ for the array of interesting owls and dolls she makes, Roxann Ojeda started sewing as a young girl. She would take fabric scraps and remnants her mother discarded to make clothes for her Barbie. With dreams of becoming a fashion designer since an early age, Roxann would wind up taking a few classes in college before marriage and a family got in the way. Fast forward many years later and the children all grown, an empty nest and bitter divorce would find Roxann’s dream once deferred, re-emerging again. With time on her hands and a need to release from her emotional journey, Retro Roxy Sewing was birthed. Starting with some simple tote bags she would sell at various craft shows, Roxann soon noticed that nobody was creating things for the younger crowds. After reflecting for a few, she decided to expand her designs and make that market her niche. It wouldn’t take long before her unique collection of custom dolls, pirates, zombies, mermaids and owls caught on, eventually earning her her nickname.
With Roxann’s original tote bags still holding their place, now instead of simple designs, they are made complete with her owls and zombie faces. Add to the mix Roxann’s signature pin up girl style aprons and you find the little girl who once made scraps from her mother’s creations, nurturing that same creative light within and coming ALIVE again!
