J&O Celebrates National Maritime Day!

On May 20, 1933 Congress declared May 22nd as National Maritime Day in the U.S. It is a time to observe its maritime heritage, to honor those who served as merchant mariners, and to recognize the benefits of the maritime industry. The significance of the date of the observance stems from the journey taken by the American steamship ‘Savannah’ when it sailed from the US to England marking the first successful crossing of the Atlantic Ocean using steam propulsion.

The recognized seafarers, or mariners as they would prefer to be called, are responsible for transporting cargo and passengers during peace time. In time of war, they act as an auxiliary to the Navy and can be called upon to deliver troops, weapons and much needed supplies for the military. Though viewed by some as a position of ease and luxury, these courageous men and women risk life and limb to serve our country during its ups and downs.

At J&O Fabrics, we honor and celebrate all of those past and present who have served and continue to serve their country on the waves of the sea with our selection of U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, anchors, and ship fabrics. Celebrate National Maritime Month on May 22nd and year round by creating great patriotic and maritime themed crafts with the cool fabric found here.
