Whether its a Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), Polyurethane (PU), Thermoplastic Olefin (TPO),  Silicone, or another application,  to protect your investment and get the longest possible use out of your vinyl / faux leather fabric, it is important to follow the proper cleaning instructions. But before we go into those, lets take a quick look at the difference between each.

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is a commodity resin with unsurpassed physical characteristics used for many purposes such as pipe, blood bags, wire cables and upholstery.

Polyurethane (PU) is an elastomeric resin which may be converted into foam, films, gaskets, and upholstery products.

Thermoplastic Olefin (TPO) a combination of Polyethylene and polypropylene, a rubber and reinforcing filler. Known for its excellent resistance to chemicals and cold and contains no phthalates. TPO is  used extensively in the automotive industry.

General Vinyl Care Maintenance Tips

  • Clean vinyl surfaces weekly as part of a regular maintenance schedule
  • Wipe up spills as soon as they occur
  • Clean with soap and water
  • Thoroughly rinse after cleaning with clear water
  • Use a clean, lint-free cloth to dry the area after cleaning

Recommended Cleaning Instructions

  1. Absorb any liquid stains by blotting the vinyl with a clean, absorbent cloth.
  2. Create a solution of 10% mild soap and water. Dampen a soft cloth with the solution and spot clean by gently rubbing the area to remove typical soiling.
  3. Dampen a clean, soft cloth with clear water and wipe the area to remove soap residue. Any residue left by cleaning agents could degrade and shorten the life of the vinyl, as well as affect its appearance if it is not removed.
  4. Use a clean, lint-free cloth to dry the area thoroughly.
  5. Clean stains immediately. The longer a stain is left on the vinyl, the more difficult it is to clean.
  6. Pre-test the cleaning agent or cleaning method in a small, inconspicuous spot to test for damage and/or discoloration BEFORE cleaning the stained area.
  7. Less concentrated cleaning solutions are less damaging than concentrated cleaning solutions.
  8. Remove any solid material on the vinyl before cleaning.

For Difficult Stains or to Disinfect

For difficult stains, follow steps 1 – 4 above using a solution of 10% household bleach and 90% water. Dampen a soft cloth with the solution and gently rub the affected area. Other harsher cleaners, including peroxide and quat cleaners, should only be used if clearly stipulated in the bottle. Follow dilution requirements listed on the cleaning product and pre-test in an inconspicuous spot to test for damage and/or discoloration BEFORE cleaning the stained area. If successful, follow steps 3 and 4 on the original stain or soiled area.

  • Do not use harsh solvents or cleaners on PU products. Only for NON-PU fabrics without a protective coating.
  • Harsh solvents or cleaners may damage your vinyl and should be used with caution.
  • Avoid abrasive powders and cleaning tools such as plastic or wire sponges or hard-bristle brushes.
  • Undiluted bleach, isopropyl alcohol, peroxide or lacquer can damage the product. If you want to use alternative cleaning methods, carefully try them in an inconspicuous area to determine potential damage to the material.
  • Avoid using vinyl conditioners or protectors on PU’s as these can degrade the product and affect performance over time.
  • Always use a soft cloth to clean stained or soiled areas. Avoid using paper towel.
  • Some cleaning products may have harmful or irritating effects.
  • Use protective gloves and eye protection where necessary, and be mindful of the safety of those around you.
  • Do not inhale or swallow any cleaning product.
  • If required, protect your clothing and/or the surrounding area from exposure.
  • Use in a well-ventilated area.
  • Follow all product manufacturers’ warnings.
