So the Tampa Bay Rays are gearing up to play the Philadelphia Phillies in the first of seven games tomorrow night in Florida in the hopes of soon securing a final win at the 2008 World Championships when all is said and done. Not really being a baseball fan myself, the hype surrounding this phase of the games is all too distracting. I mean, everywhere I go in the Tri-State area, its Phillies this and Phillies that. I come into work and that is all people are ordering. Fifteen yards of Philly fleece here and 20 yards there; what are these people doing with all this 100% polyester stuff anyway? At some point I had to ask. Seems many recently secured tickets at unbelievable costs ($1,000 and up) for Game #2 being held right here in the City of Brotherly Love this Saturday. Others are making fun and funky paraphernalia for friends and family members who will be rooting from stadium seats while they sit snuggly at home in front of their screen televisions. From warm throws and fashionable head coverings, to comfy fanny seat cushions and wind resistant hoodies, no fan is planning to be without some form of protection as they root, root, root for their home team all the way to the BIG WIN.
As for me, while baseball itself seems like a boring sport and quite UN-entertaining for me, I must admit, I do get a rise out of the fans hype and response good, bad or indifferent to the sport, players and teams they love the most. Though you won’t catch me screaming from the stadiums as another home run is hit, nor sporting a Phillies team shirt just to follow the crowd, you might see me in the last final minutes of the ninth inning waiting for your reaction from inside the walls of J&O Fabrics, as the calls for more Phillies fleece come pouring in.
