Handmade accessories are a wonderful way to revive your wardrobe or just accomplish a seasonal switch-up. We love this fabric clutch tutorial from Martha Stewart; just find your fabric at J&O Fabrics to get started on your own version! The simple clutch is flirty, feminine and adds a simple touch of sophistication to any ensemble.
This simple fabric clutch provides a burst of color and will lead to a stream of compliments! (Admit it—we all like those).
You will need:
• One or more styles of decorative fabric. You may opt to add a silk lining, or use a different fabric for an interior contrast. AtJ&O Fabrics, we have it all!
• A heavy fusible stabilizer
• Fusible fleece
• Rotary cutter or master scissor skills
• Iron
• Sewing machine
• Coordinating thread
• Grid ruler
• Transparent tape
• Multi-purpose cement (Martha recommends Bond 527)
• Metal frame hardware for the clutch
What to do:
• Prepare fabric by cutting 13×13 1/2 –inch pieces from the print that you want to be the exterior. Do the same with the heavy fusible stabilizer.
• Next, cut a 10 1/2-by-13-inch piece of fusible fleece.
• Iron the stabilizer to the wrong side of the exterior fabric.
• Now fuse the fleece fabric to the center of the stabilized fabric.
• Face the right sides of the outer fabric and linings together and sew ½-inch seams along both 13 ½-inch sides.
• Turn out and press flat
• Next, fold in half and line-up the top seams with the lining on the inside.
• Use a ¼-inch seam along the outer edges, trimming seam allowances to 1/8-inch. Neatly trim corners.
• Turn again, the outer fabric should be inside.
• Complete a ¼-inch seam along the edges. A finished French seam is nice.
• Turn right-side out.
• Fold the corners down, mark and sew a 2-inch gusset on each. Trim corner to 1/8-inch.
• Turn again so that the lining is on the outside and sew a ¼-inch seam along the gusset.
• Turn right-side out. This is the last time, I promise!
• Now apply the fabric glue to the metal clutch frame and carefully insert it. Secure in place with tape while the glue dries. It is wise to allow several hours or overnight for this part!
• Once dry, remove tape and go flaunt your latest accessory!
