Fabric can make any item ‘cute as a button’, even a button! If you have ever admired the selection of decorative buttons lining the store shelves, though not exactly admired the price tag attached, you are in luck! Making your very own fabric buttons is affordable, fun and highly addictive! Before you know it, you will be garnishing random clothing items, handbags, curtains, pillows and more with your unique and handmade buttons. Start by browsing our online fabric store for inspirations and decorative fabrics!
You will need:
• Buttons in assorted shapes and sizes. Make sure they have a shank or plastic cover. Note: Metal buttons may rust if the fabric becomes wet and takes too long to dry!
• A variety of fabrics (the more the better!). Remember, you are free to overlap more than one fabric, depending on the size of the button. This is your chance to let the creativity flow!
• Needle & thread
• Fabric scissors
• A pen
What to do:
• Place the button over the desired fabric. Move it around some to decide where you want to cut the fabric.
• Draw a light circle around the button, leaving enough space for the fabric to then wrap around the backside of the button. Cut out.
• With needle and thread, stitch about 2 millimeters inside the edge of the fabric circle. Then pull the thread lightly until it resembles a mushroom shape or shower-cap.
• Lastly, insert the button into the fabric cover and pull thread tight to form the cover. Once the button seems secure inside the fabric, tie the thread and knot it.
• Pro-tip: You may opt to spray fabric buttons with a protective coating to avoid stains!
