From Rags to Riches: The Robert Kaufman Fabric Story

Everyone loves a great rags-to-riches story. The worlds of sports, entertainment and business abound with tales of men and women who made a better life for themselves. The story of Robert Kaufman is the tale of a Russian immigrant who made his way to the United States hoping for a more prosperous future. Kaufman’s hard work started to pay off as by his early twenties he was already the proprietor of the successful Meadowpark Clothes, a men’s clothier.

Nevertheless, Robert’s difficulties weren’t over. Starting in 1929 the Great Depression wreaked havoc on businesses both large and small, and Robert’s shop was one of the victims of the financial meltdown. Kaufman persevered throughout the next decade. By 1942 he had a showroom on New York’s prestigious 5th Avenue and had set in motion the company that would become Robert Kaufman Fabrics.

Robert Kaufman relocated to Los Angeles in the mid-1940s, continuing his prosperous business. The 1950s saw the company introduce a fabric called “Windjammer” under the guidance of Robert’s sons Alvin and Saul. This was the beginning of the company’s move from jobbing fabrics to converting them.

An innovative spirit led to further expansion throughout the 1970s and 1980s. A momentous development for quilters everywhere was when Robert Kaufman began to focus on making quilting fabrics. This happy development has brought quilters premier 100% cotton fabrics for well over twenty years.
