Find Your Creative Outlet! Fabric Covered Wall Outlet Crafts

Fabric is such a fast and fabulous way to brighten up mundane household items, like an ordinary wall outlet! While there are certainly a plethora of plastic decorative switchplates out there, fabric adds texture and an overall better quality to this project! Browse our selection of decorative fabrics and plug into your creative outlet! This is a cute idea for plug-in outlets and light switches.

You will need:

  • Desired fabric. Remember, the bolder the better! Find a style that coordinates with the room, yet stands out a bit.
  • Exacto knife
  • Yes! brand paste stick flat glue
  • Mod Podge Gloss Lustre (yes, both types of glue!)
  • Hole-punch or very steady hand

What to do:

  • Place the wall outlet that you intend to cover with fabric over the fabric. Cut it out, leaving just enough fabric around the edges to fold in and glue to the back of the outlet. Approximately ¼” larger than the outlet.
  • Use the Exacto knife to carefully cut out the prong slots. Do not do the screw holes yet!
  • For the screw holes, a paper-punch provides a smoother cut.
  • If you are using a fabric that is apt to fraying, you may make a simple facing for the prong slots, as pictured below:
  • Next, carefully glue the fabric to the outlet using the Yes! glue. This glue does not slip around as much as damp Mod Podge, which will serve as the exterior coat.
  • Allow to dry completely
  • Finally, paint a layer of Mod Podge Gloss Luster over the entire exterior. This will protect the fabric and add some shine.

Safety: Do not screw back onto the wall until completely dry. If it is a plug-in fixture, make sure the fabric will not enter the outlet when something is plugged in!
