When we at J&O think of milk, we think of cows and delicious goodies that one might drink milk with (like chocolate cake for example). The last thing that we think of is what we know best, fabric. That is why we were incredibly surprised when we found out that German designer and scientist Anke Domaske created an organic fiber using spoiled milk.
Anke created the fiber as an alternative to cotton. The material not only takes minimal time to make (about an hour), but is also an environmentally friendly organic fabric; throughout the entire production process, no pesticides or harmful chemicals are used. As you might imagine, a fabric as inventive (and beautiful) as the one she is making with her team is beginning to take off.

When she was starting out, Anke began showing the clothes that she made from her new milk fabric in craft shows in Japan and Europe. As she gained popularity, she also started doing runway shows to promote her designs and her product. It was not long before her wears began appearing in the closets of hollywood starlets (Mischa Barton).
The incredible young designer has spent her life balancing her love of design and science. She learned how to sew from her grandmother at a very young age and initially pursued a career in fashion in Japan before returning home to Germany to go to school where she studied microbiology. The milk fabric is truly a mixture of her two great loves!
