Fire is a dangerous necessity. We need it to stay warm in the winter, cook our food, and forge the materials that our buildings are made out of. However, it is a frightening fact of life that when given even the slightest liberty, the element can destroy lives. Scientist Jaime Grunlan, an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University, has recently developed a way to help those at risk of being burned and drastically reduce fire’s potential effect.
After years of research, Grunlan has discovered a way to make an incredibly flame- resistant coating that can go over any fabric. The kicker is, it is not only one of the most effective substances on the market for its purpose, it is also nontoxic and made from renewable ingredients. Naturally, something so awesome is getting a lot of attention. The professor has already been approached by the United States military, mattress manufacturers, Federal Aviation Administration, and numerous other companies both in and out of the US.
To use the product, one must cover every fiber of fabric with a thin coating of the film to enhance its flame- retardant properties. In addition to fighting away fire, it also protects from UV rays and abrasion resistance. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure this is actually the stuff that Iron Man put on his suit that allowed him to fly into outer space.
There are endless possibilities for the fabric protector and there is already talk of using it for car seats, children’s pajamas, home draperies and lab equipment. I don’t know about everyone else, but if this ever becomes released to the general public I am planning on sewing myself a Wonder Woman suit made out of some colorful novelty fabric, dipping it in this product, and going and saving some cats from burning buildings. Whose with me?!
