7 ways to make a ruffle:
- Basic fold-over ruffle. To make this version, fold over the strip of fabric and gather along the top.
- Basic hemmed ruffle: Fold the fabric over ¼” and then ¼” again, press and stitch, gathering on top.
- Serged ruffle: Serge the bottom edge and then gather the top.
- Tube ruffle: Fold the fabric strip in half to form a tube, and then sew it closed. Finish by gathering in the center of the strip for a bubbly effect.
- Two-tone ruffle: This technique entails sewing two fabric strips together, pressing the seam open and folding the wrong sides together. Finish by pressing again and gathering at the top.
- Bias ruffle: Cut a strip out on the bias and gather at top or middle.
- Knit ruffles: Using a strip of knit fabric, gather a section to form a ruffle. Because it is a knit, there is no need to finish the edging.
Adding ruffles to a pillow is an easy way to add impact. Mixing and matching the fabrics creates a unique piece that is all your own!
