Kids love to have their own special apron for helping out in the kitchen, both boys and girls! This tutorial will show you how to create a pattern for a child’s apron using one of their t-shirts! Begin by choosing a fabric from J&O, we recommend the NFL fabrics for the boys!
Cute idea: use your child’s t-shirt to create a pattern for an apron. (Photo by Happy Grandma Projects)
You will need:
- 1 yard for main fabric
- ½ yard for coordinating fabric
- Fitted child’s tee
- These instructions are based on a child’s size 4T and can be adjusted to your child
- All seams are ½ inch unless otherwise noted
What to do:
- Create your pattern by tracing the tee from the armhole down a few inches onto paper. On a separate sheet of paper, trace from the armhole to the neck.
- Draw the shape of the armhole
- Make a horizontal line about an inch below the armhole, this will be the waistline
- Draw a large ‘U’ shape for the neckline, make sure it is very oversized for comfort and ease of slipping in and out of! Remember that the neckline should be a bit flat, so the U should not necessarily be rounded at the bottom. Measure along the bottom of this piece and label it “measurement A”
- Next cut out 2 waistbands that are the same length as measurement A. These pieces should be 1”x3” wide and use the coordinating fabric.
- Also from the coordinating fabric: Cut four strips 15” long by 4” wide. These are the straps.
- Main fabric: One piece the length of measurement A. 2” wide by 14” long. This will be the ‘skirt’ of the apron.
- Prepping the top for gathering: Make 2 vertical lines a couple of inches from the center and cut. Open the 2 end pieces, double the amount and cut out. Connect the two ends and cut out the new pattern top apron piece.
- Cut out 2 top apron pieces using the main fabric
- Fold a strap in half longways and stitch it along one long and one short side of the apron top
- Clip corner and turn
- Press
- Repeat for remaining 3 straps
- Stitch together the two apron tops with right sides facing, leave bottom open
- Use a gathering stitch inside the ½” seam allowance along the top and gather to original measurement
- Turn and press
- Bottom: Add another gathering stitch along the bottom inside. Pin waist band to top with right sides facin
- Stitch neatly
- Fold waistbands down, press and pin edge
- Create a hem along both the sides and bottom of the apron
- You may add an additional gathering stitch along the top and pull to mesh with waist width
- Pin and stitch
- Finish all raw edges and topstitch!
