Easy 5-Step Fabric Camera Strap Craft

If you find standard camera straps less than comfy and or stylish, try this do-it-yourself fabric camera strap craft! Choose any style fabric you please from J&O, and there is even a convenient lens cap pocket! Note: This craft is intended for standard Canon and Nikon DSLR/SLRs. Finished size is: 24.5 inches long by 2.75 inches wide.

A camera strap can be a fashion statement! 

You will need:

  • Fabric of choice. At least 2 are recommended to recreate the photo!
  • Coordinating thread
  • Fusible interfacing
  • Heavy fusible fleece
  • Rotary cutter and scissors

Cut fabrics:

  • Cut fabric as follows: Two strap pieces 26.5 x 3.75 inches. These will be the front and back of the neck strap.
  • Cut the pocket piece (just one piece): 5.5 x 3.75
  • Interfacing should measure 3.5 x 2.75 inches
  • Fusible fleece: 24.5 x 5.5 inches

Fabric Camera Strap

Create:

  • Center the interfacing onto the back of the lens pocket and fuse. Fold the end over ½” and fold again for a finished edge. Line up the stitching with the end of the strap piece and baste.
  • Position the strap pieces right sides facing and sew along one edge with a ½” allowance. Press open seam.
  • Place fusible fleece into the wrong side of the piece and fuse. Fold up the short ends ½” and then another ½”. Press and stitch two lines on both ends.
  • Fold the strap in half with right sides touching and sew a ½” seam. Trim to ¼”, turn right side out and press well.
  • Finish with a topstitch along both sides, 1/8” from the edging. Be mindful not to sew the lens cap pocket closed!
