Double Gauze, The Ideal Summer Fabric!

A little over a year ago we posted a blog about the wonders of gauze fabric as a summer material. And while we still agree that there is no fabric as lightweight, breathable, absorbant or fashionable as this ancient textile good for the lazy hazy days of summer, we are truly loving the newer double gauze cotton for its added non-transparent feature. Invented by the Japanese with the intent of curing just that, while still allowing the same desirable qualities of the fabric to remain, double gauze is the answer to all our ‘staying-cool-and-cute-in-the-summer’ woes.

Consisting of two layers of sheer to medium weight gauze that are attached using a pattern of microscopic stitches visible mainly on the ‘wrong’ side of the fabric only, double gauze is not just the perfect fabric for summer attire like dresses and tops, but for year round quilts and home accent pieces too. Its soft carefree look and feel make it appealing in almost any print or color it comes in. Not only is it an easy fabric to sew, but its quick and hassel free care makes this material a desired staple for any seamstress or designer creating for the season.

When working with double gauze, a 70/10 or 90/11 size needle is all that is required to preserve the integrety of the weave. Try either a French seam technique or a 5/8″ with zig zag finish to give it a neat and professional look. Sergers are great too for adding a colorful overstitch to your creative craft. Press on hot steam setting for crisp lines and seams. Wash in your gentle cycle and hang dry for a sweet fresh scent

Whatever you decide to make, have fun playing around with the many prints and designs surfacing across the canvas of gauze or double gauze, the ideal summer fabric.
