String snowball craft

Handmade snowballs have become a traditional craft. This is a beginner level fabric craft that the kiddos will love to help finish, as it involves popping balloons and glue!

You will need:

  • Fabric or fabrics of choice
  • Small sized balloons
  • Thin white bakers twine (blend in red, blue or green if you wish!)
  • Scissors
  • Wax paper
  • Fabric stiffening liquid
  • Foam paintbrush

What to do:

  • Inflate the small balloons to the size of a fist, or roughly 3-4 inches in diameter.
  • Begin at the end of the balloon with the tie and carefully wrap the twine around the balloon, covering 3/4ths of the surface. This will take some time, and be sure to change directions with the twine for a ‘wrapped’ appearance.
  • Knot the ends of the twine when complete.
  • Place ball on wax paper and coat with fabric stiffening glue using the foam paintbrush.
  • Coat the twine with glue completely, and allow to dry thoroughly!
  • Now for the fun part! Grab a needle and pop the balloon! The twine should be dry and stiff and form a transparent snowball without the support of the balloon.
  • It may be a bit of a challenge to separate the balloon from the glued twine, tweezers can help. Gently pull balloon remnants off of snowball.
  • When all of the snowballs are complete, arrange them in a transparent or decorative bowl and garnish with fabric flowers or fabric ribbon!
