When we think about Sunbrella or outdoor fabric, we tend to visualize its purposeful and stylish use on patio furniture, awnings, and umbrellas. But what about its use as a custom-made shower curtain? Afterall, like the acrylic based fibers found in Sunbrella, most outdoor fabrics consist of an equally water and mildew resistant polyester blend that is both durable and easy to clean. While one can use almost any fabric to create unique visual bathing experiences, the use of an outdoor fabric negates the necessity of an additional shower liner for protection and makes available to us some really beautiful designs that we might otherwise not consider.
A typical shower curtain measures 72″ by 72″ and a stall shower curtain, 50″ by 78″. As most outdoor fabrics come in 54″, you’ll have to sew together two panels to cover the length (from top to bottom) or create two panels to complete your width (right to left) if you decide to do-it-yourself or have them made. If you’re using a print, you’ll want to remember to match up your patterns for a seamless look. Most DIY shower curtain projects will require appx 5 yards of material to cover your top and bottom hems completely and successfully.
A basic black and white color palate with a funky geometric design can offer the opportunity to accent with a more vibrant color that adds a little ‘pop’ to an otherwise simplistic bathroom decor. Match up with vintage styled black and white floor tiling to carry the theme throughout.
A colorful paisley and floral print design in sea colors can offer a fluid feel to an already watery environment. Make the curtain the sets the color palate by accenting with coordinating solids that support.
Vertical stripes give the optical illusion of elongation and widen the appearance of an already small bathroom space. Accent the room with coordinating solids when considering bath mats and curtain decor.
When considering how to care for your shower curtain, standard cleaning techniques for outdoor material apply.
- Always use natural soap, never detergent
- Use cold or lukewarm temperature, never more than 100 degrees
- Air dry only. Never apply heat to your Sunbrella or outdoor fabric.
