Scarves are a great accessory, but did you know that they can also make wonderful holiday décor? Follow the simple instructions below to craft your own version of a Christmas mantle runner by pairing a scarf and your favorite holiday fabrics! If you do not have a fireplace, this also looks great on a table top, bar or counter space.
Scarves are very versatile–use them to make a festive holiday runner!
You will need:
- Holiday themed fabric and existing plain scarves if you have some. If you prefer, just buy some fleece fabric to go with the decorative prints.
- Scissors
- Mod Podge or hot glue
- Desired embellishments (buttons, snowflakes, little Santa’s and reindeer)
What to do:
- Begin by cutting the fabrics. The bottom layer will be the solid color or fleece fabric. Cut it to measure longer than the mantle, so that it will drape and hang over the edges (how far over is entirely up to you). The standard scarf will drape nicely.
- Next, decide how much of the solid fabric you want the holiday themed fabric to cover. You can use newspaper to make a quick pattern to cut it out!
- • If you prefer not to sew, paint a layer of Mod Podge or a thin layer of hot glue where the decorative fabric will be positioned.
- Carefully place the fabric over the glue and press firmly. Allow to dry completely before adding embellishments.
- You may glue the embellishments on individually, or paint a layer of glitter Mod Podge over the decorative fabric for shimmer and press them on while it is wet!
Add embellishments for texture and flair. Plaid fabrics will mix well with most holiday prints, allowing more opportunities to mix and match.
