Even if you are relatively new to sewing, do not be intimidated by this rewarding project! You will learn to gather, attach tulle and sew like the pros with practice.

You will need:
• 2 ½ yards of tulle. Use 2 different shades or colors to add interest (there will be leftover tulle for future projects, but you need the full yardage due to length requirements)
• A child’s t-shirt
• Coordinating thread
• Rotary cutter or the steady hand to wield scissors
• Ruler
• Self-healing mat

What to do:
• The top layer of tulle should be cut 12 inches wide by 90 inches long
• The bottom layer of tulle should be cut 14 inches wide by 90 inches long
• Fold each layer in half, separately, and stack them on top of each other. Line the raw edges upward and pin the tulle together near those raw edges.

• Use a basting stitch, the longest available stitch on your machine with the least tension) and sew along the length of the raw edges. Leave plenty of thread along each side and do not back-stitch.
• Pull one side of the extra thread to begin gathering the tulle. Voila! It is beginning to take shape and look like a tutu! Continue until the tulle appears to be the correct width for the t-shirt.

• Begin at the middle back of the t-shirt and pin the tulle to the tee with the shorter top layer of tulle lying on top. Pin close to the bottom of the shirt, and when you reach the starting point–overlap a bit.
• Line up the shirt under your needle and foot. Use a medium zigzag or similar stitch to secure the tulle to the tee, back-stitching at the start and finish.
• Ta-da! Your little one will squeal with delight at the latest addition to her little wardrobe!
