Tips for Working With Challenging Fabrics

Sewing tips to get the most out of fabrics that are a challenge:

Ironing. Preparation for a fabric project typically begins with pressing, unless otherwise restricted. Some fabrics should not be pressed, and some need special attention during the process. Specialty fabrics like silks and synthetics can be fussy. Always start with the iron on low heat and be sure to place another fabric between the specialty fabric and iron. This will prevent burning and damage. Keeping a yard or so of scrap fabric close to the iron is a good idea.

Cutting. Always invest as carefully in proper scissors as you do in choosing your favorite fabrics! Dull or cheap scissors can destroy fabric, especially a specialty fabric. Crafting scissors should be super sharp and a rotary cutter is also an excellent investment. When you are working with a fabric that has a tendency to fray, place a liquid seam sealant around the edges. Pinking shears are a definite do for any crafting arsenal.

Invest in a walking foot for your sewing machine. There are many types and styles of presser feet. A walking foot makes working with challenging fabrics much easier, especially slippery ones.

Needles. Using the appropriate needle with the appropriate fabrics is crucial. Many specialty fabrics require a stronger needle, or thicker. Know what you are working with and prepare your machine accordingly to avoid damage to it and the fabric.

Lastly, be patient! If you are a whiz on the machine and used to zipping right along, you may need more patience with challenging fabrics. Take your time and get the hang of how the fabric reacts before rushing through a project.
