How would you define madness? In just a few days we’ll all be subject to the craziness that is March Madness, the NCAA’s college basketball tournament that is one of the most exciting events in American sports. March Madness is a single elimination tournament featuring 65 college basketball teams. The madness even precedes the tournament as teams vie for entry or position during their conference tournaments. Once in, each team faces a gauntlet of games before reaching the ultimate destination: the Championship Game.

College Team Fabric: Pac 10 History

The Pac-10 first came into existence as the Pacific Coast Conference. Conference play commenced in 1916 with four teams. Over the next decade more schools would join, and by the time UCLA joined the conference in 1928 ten teams were apart of the Pacific Coast Conference.

After a series of scandals at several conference schools, the Pacific Coast Conference was dissolved. In its place the Athletic Association of Western Universities with four members: California, Stanford, UCLA and USC and Washington. After the addition of Oregon, Oregon State and Washington State over the next few years, the conference’s name was changed to the Pacific-8 Conference. When Arizona and Arizona State joined the conference in 1978, the Pac-10 was born.
