Where did the infamous ‘bow tie’ get its start and what purpose did it serve? It wasn’t to keep a man’s neck warm and it surely wasn’t to make him feel more comfortable. Maybe it was designed to simply keep his collar closed or strategically draw attention to the length of his beard (which in some cultures is a measure of wisdom). Whatever the reason it first made its debut, we found its presence in history and fashion important enough to do a little research and share our findings.
Seems the bow tie originated among Croatian mercenaries during the Prussian wars of the 17th century when they actually DID use their scarves around their neck to hold together the opening of their shirts! As a modified version of its 1600’s predecessor, the cravat, by the 1800’s the upper classes in France then adopted the bow tie and lead it to become a staple in men’s fashion accessories offering both a sense of refinements and style.
Since its introduction and mass acceptance into men’s dress, the bow tie has gone through several metamorphoses of its own in both function and form. Leaving its formal, modest roots behind, the bow tie could now be found in street fashions, on run way models, the young and seasoned man, even women. Appropriated into a variety of looks through an array of fabrics and prints, the bow tie broke free from its mold as a purely formal accessory to meet the ever-changing fashion landscape.
With style so individualized in the 21st Century, no longer are we limited to just how creative our bow tie fabric selection can be. Looking to bring a bit of your wild side to a traditionally black-tie affair? In ode to the old and embracement of the new, dare to don bright colors and unique patterns.
