This is Becky’s Kids. I’m Becky and I’ve been a nanny for years, and along the way I’ve done lots of cool crafts for kids. On Becky’s kids I’ll give how-to’s, tips for crafting with children, and seasonal and age-appropriate ideas. This month it’s all about family. Without the rush of school or holidays, summer is a great time to get closer to your family. This month’s craft is a family flag. Use a little felt and make a flag that represents all the best things about your family.
Materials needed:
– a 12″ x 24″ piece of felt
-additional pieces of colored felt
– a 24″ long dowel, 1/2″ in diameter
– scissors
– glue
Step by Step:
1. Fold over the other short end of the felt 1″ and glue to make a pocket. If you want, you can cut a v-shape at one short end of the felt to look like a banner.
2. Cut out shapes in the colored felt that represent your family’s interests. If you like to camp you can cut out a tent, if you love your movie night you can do film strips or popcorn. You can even make a coat of arms for the family. Be sure to devote a space for each family member’s interests too.
3. Glue the pieces on to the felt. Let your kids help with the design and layout- it’s their family too! Let the glue dry, slide the dowel into its pocket and you’re done!

As you can see, this can be as simple or as involved of a project as you’d like it to be. Just make sure the kids help- you want them to have pride in their project too. Doing crafts together is a great way to spend family time, so spend a little time with your kids this summer.
