Sewing Box Essentials

Even if you aren’t a champ at sewing, every house should have a sewing box. Everyone gets fallen hems, popped buttons, and busted straps. However, those malfunctions usually occur at the worst possible time. Here’s the bare bones for a great basic sewing kit that will help you out of any pinch.

Top 5 Crafts for Guys

J&O Top Five Crafts For Men

When most guys think of arts and crafts they either think of something that they did in summer camp twenty years ago or as something their wife or girlfriend does while waiting for their husbands to come home from fighting bears and catching fish with their bare hands. However, when it comes down to it, a craft is anything you make whether it be decorative, utilitarian, or something between the two; the idea that crafting is just a female activity is totally false. There are a myriad of crafts that guy can and should make. Here’s a few to get you started.

J&O Fabrics Disney Princess courtesy of The Walt Disney Company

I don’t think I have ever met a little girl who didn’t dream about being a princess. As a result, there is a high demand for cool princess gear online to help them live out their dreams. The items listed below, courtesy of poshtots.com, are some of the most decadent princess items that the internet has to offer to the little princesses of the world. While these are great to look at, they are not as easy to obtain; it isn’t cheap being royalty! I know I certainly couldn’t afford the items below for my little one, which is why I would look at them for inspiration! It’s free and it pushes the craftiest of us to create something just as beautiful for significantly less.

Fabric Cures for the Winter Blues

Summer time fabric J&O

Winter is finally beginning to descend upon us in the Philadelphia area and as a result I am missing summer more than ever. I keep daydreaming about hanging out on the beach, getting a tan, laying in a hammock relaxing and listening to the waves crash around me. Unfortunately, as someone paying off their college loans I can’t exactly pull together the extra cash to hop on the next jet and head to somewhere warm. In an attempt to bring the beach to me, I plan on using fun tropical novelty fabric to create a beach-y environment.

This is Becky’s Kids. I’m Becky and I’ve been a nanny for years, and along the way I’ve done lots of cool crafts for kids. On Becky’s kids I’ll give how-to’s, tips for crafting with children, and seasonal and age-appropriate ideas. This month it’s all about family. Four Emergency Sewing Fixes Everyone Should Know

When it comes to sewing, there are a few emergency fixes everyone should know. They save you money at the tailor’s, time waiting for the fix, and the trouble of re-working your wardrobe when your favorite piece of clothing is down for the count. With a needle and thread you can repair most wardrobe malfunctions, you just need to know how.

1. Buttons. Re-sewing a button is one of the simplest fixes out there, but it’s surprising how many people have never done it. All you really need is the right button and strong thread. Tie the ends of the thread together before you begin for extra strength, and make sure you’re sewing the new button exactly where the old one was.

5 Coolest Sewing Kits found Online

Everyone needs a sewing kit. Whether it’s a little one for the car or a decked-out sewing box to leave at home, when a button pops off or a hem falls you need something to get the job done. Here’s 5 of the coolest and wildest online at the moment.

1. My first sewing kit– This fun kit is a great way to get kids into sewing. Just be sure your child is old enough- needles are sharp!

2. REI travel kit-Here’s one of the more utilitarian of the bunch. It’s got lots of different threads, scissors, a measuring tape and almost everything you need to fix wardrobe malfunctions in a pinch.

Three “Machine-Free” Sewing Projects

For hundreds of years sewing machines didn’t exist. It’s easy to get spoiled with the straight, even stitches of a machine. But sewing by hand is an art as much as a craft. Now I’m not suggesting we go back to the days where girls made samplers to show off their sewing skills for potential suitors; but sewing by hand requires a finesse and a grace we can all benefit from.

1. Baby booties. Little feet need to stay warm, and baby booties in novelty fleece or chenille are the perfect thing. This is a great project to sew by hand because of just how tiny the work needs to be. Feel free to add some embellishment but remember that baby will outgrow them faster than you think!

Cool Crafts for Sporty Feet

Sporty feet are busy feet, especially when it comes to kids and sports. They do more than carry their owners from place to place; they score goals, run passes and jump for that 3-pointer. That said, the feet belonging to sports nuts young and old need a little extra love. Here’s a few ideas for crafts to keep your feet (and you) happy.

Sport shoe deodorizers. Sweaty feet stink- especially those belonging to teenage boys. These nifty little things are fabric bags stuffed with cat litter.  You can even use an old sock and tie a knot in the end (just make sure that doesn’t stink too!)

The Bike Nut: 5 Cyclist-Friendly Fabrics

I’m Becky and I’m a bike nut. I’m a bike commuter and put about 80 miles on my bike every week, rain or shine. I’m also getting ready for a century in the end of September, which is a 100 mile race/ ride. I love my bike. I’m also a crafter though, and I like making things that are useful when it comes to my bike. I’ll be talking about crafts that pertain to biking, whether it be on the bike, off the bike, or just cool stuff that I’ve found. To get started, here’s a list of 5 useful fabrics when it comes to bikes.
