Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice

Sugar and Spice and Everything Niceimage by Tobyotter

What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice and everything nice. That’s what little girls are made of! Ask any mother of a little girl and she will agree with this poem whole heartily! There is just something fun about sewing for girls. All the lace and sparkles, netting and organza still makes me get excited. I suppose I’ve never outgrown dressing in pink and enjoying girl-y prints. Thankfully J&O has just the selection of fabric I need to fulfill all little girl’s fairytale fantasies.

Be Ready with Fabric for Father’s Day Gifts!

Be prepared for Father’s Day with a fabulous fabric gift! It’s time to remember one of the most important men in your life. He’s been there through the bumps and bruises, paid for your room and board and watched you become an adult. Now, it’s time to give back a little and there is nothing like a handcrafted gift that shows you care. Forget all the cheesy ties and the as seen on TV fishing lures why not give him something that was tailored exactly to his tastes. Check out my fabric picks for the fathers below.

Fabric Picks for the Little Fellow

Baby Boy

I have been doing some sewing for several new babies that have come into my life over the past year. It’s so fun to make the tiny clothes and cuddly blankets for each new bundle of joy that makes his or her grand appearance! At each baby shower I’ve attended, several of my friends or relatives have crafted handmade gifts for the babe on the way. Each one has such a personal touch it’s hard for the new momma not to shed a tear as she imagines finally holding her little one. The love and hours dedicated to crafting something with your own hands is a gift that has no price.

Revisit Diners and Drive-Ins

American Diner

Summer, drive-ins and diners just seem to go together. It’s a fact that Americans have been in love with the drive-in restaurant since it’s inception. Afterall, who can resist pulling your car up to the menu, ordering a couple malts and a burger without leaving the comfort of the vehicle or missing your favorite song on the radio?

In the small towns were I grew up, mom and pop diners were the place to go for  home style fare that was finger-licking good. While we waited for our french fries, barbecue chicken and apple pie we’d pop a quarter in the jukebox. Once the food arrived we were elbow deep in barbecue sauce and napkins, but it was oh so good.

African Inspired Prints

Namib DesertAfrica is such a beautiful and diverse country teeming with amazing wildlife, rivers, mountains and deserts. The cultural history of the continent and its people dates back to the cradle of civilization. Fabric in Africa has a millennial story behind it. It truly is sacred to the culture. Philosophy, ethics, morals and history are all conveyed through each thread. Not only are the patterns valued as a means to communicate a message but also the colors that are chosen are significant.

How To: Sew A Felt Needle Book

Felt Needle Book Finished

It is a fact, I love to sew. It doesn’t matter if it’s on the machine or by hand. I also enjoy embroidery and have a couple dozen projects in progress. Since summer is soon approaching that means I’ll be traveling again. When I travel I like to pack my sewing and embroidery gear with me. So, I created this felt needle book to keep my pins and needles in place while on the road. The felt keeps them secure. If I have a needle already threaded it can easily be tucked away for a quick repair anytime and anywhere!

Anchors Aweigh Nautical Fabric

There is something that is so comforting about being near the sea. You can smell the salty air before you even see the water. The cool sea breezes are irresistible on a hot inland afternoon. I love strolling up and down the coastline searching for shells, sea glass and other treasures washed ashore by the rolling waves as sea gulls circle overhead.

Since I only get to visit the ocean and don’t have the luxury of living on the coast I like to bring a little of the sea into my home via fabrics that compliment my seashore treasures. In fact, I’ve noticed that nautical fabric is all the rage in apparel for kids and adults alike. So, if you’re looking to freshen up your home, add a few of these decorative fabrics in your cart today!

The Dressmaker’s Thread Arsenal

Ever visited a website or fabric store and stumbled upon the notion, sewing supply and thread selection? Do you get puzzled trying to sort through what thread you need for a project? Let’s face it, we all want to get home and get sewing and not be scratching our head over thread. Yet, thread is just as important as the project itself. If you don’t purchase good quality thread or purchase the wrong type for the fabric you are using your project is in jeopardy of not lasting as long as you might like or not cooperating with the sewing machine itself. So, dressmaker’s often amass a thread arsenal that includes a rainbow of their most turned to threads as well as some specialty types for special projects. Check out my listing below for a guide to threads for your next project.
