I made a bed for my dog out of phiphertex. I wanted a mesh material because she is incontinent. However with the phiphertex the urine still stays trapped in the webbing before seeping through and the material is very slick which makes it slippery for her when she is trying to get up.
Is there any other material that would be strong, allow water to easily pass through without sitting in the holes of the fabric and not be slippery.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Gayle
Dear Gayle,
In part, I can overstand why you would choose the material you did. It is undoubtedly strong and easy to clean, making your loved canines occasional accidents to be cleaned with ease, but after reading your inquiry over and researching a bit on phiphertex mesh fabric, I wondered if taking another avenue would offer you and your pooch a little bit more comfort and convenience.
Have you ever considered using a dry weave and/or 100% cotton fleece material instead? Both are used with success in products catering to those who suffer from incontinence, and offer both protection and comfort with use. Dry weave material is often found commercially in diapers for adults and children as well as sanitary pads, creating an absorbent top layer for fluids, while cotton polyester is known for both its warmth and high absorbency properties. Creating a fitted cover around a plastic encased cushion, or buying a yard of either material and simply tucking it over and around the protective cushion could offer your pooch a warm and comfy nights sleep despite his/her bladder leakage, and a fairly easy clean up process for you. A quick toss in the wash (or sink soak) and dry cycles is all it would take to clean your fabric of any lingering scent or moisture. Make more than one cushion cover for even more convenience.
If after all is said and done, if you still find that a sturdier and more convenient material is what you desire, try those rubber mesh mats that are usually used in doorways. Found at almost any home goods store at a fairly inexpensive price, these durable and somewhat comfortable items are usually sold by the piece (rectangular) but may be available by the yard at specialty textile stores. Offering the added protection for your poochs special needs, these rubber mats can serve as a top layer or a solo layer for your pets bed.
