Ask Netfah: Durable Jacket Lining.

Dear Netfah,

I am making a jacket to wear on  an overseas trip I am planning to take with my family next month and I want to have a place to store my important personals like cell phone, wallet, passports, money etc. Instead of carrying a bag or purse, I want to secure my stuff in pockets in the jacket…all eight of them. The thing is, I don’t necessarily want all the pockets to be accessed from the shell of the jacket, but rather from an inner lining so I will need a material that is not only durable, but breathable as well as the climate where we are going is more tropical than not. Any suggestions?

Dear Eight is Enough,

There is nothing like a multi-pocketed garment. Whether it’s cargo pants, jumpsuits, jackets, or the fabulous pocketed designer gowns I have seen on award shows, there is no better feeling than the security of having your vital necessities at your disposal in such a way. That being said, there are a few options available to meet your needs. Since durabililty as well as breathability are both important to you, a fun novelty cotton or solid broadcloth fabric would work. The novelty cotton prints are made from a soft yet durable natural fiber that is highly absorbant and available an array of prints and designs to personalize your creation. Broadcloth on the otherhand, is usually found in either a 100% cotton or a poly/cotton blend. The benefit of the blend is that you are not only getting a material that is easy to care for, but one that comes with added durability. The set back, because polyester is a chemically produced woven synthetic, it takes away from the breathability that cotton alone offers. With these tidbits in mind, finding the best fabric for the job is the easy part. Now you can use that energy to finish the real project a hand…all those pockets!
