I am giving my bed a DIY makeover this spring and am uncertain as how best to measure my box spring for a bed skirt I am making. I was told that I would need to take the mattress off to get an accurate measurement. Is this true?

Dear June,
A bed skirt fits between the mattress and box spring and drops to the floor. Sometimes called a dust ruffle, it’s used to cover up the not so pretty box spring, bed frame, and side rails. To make sure the skirt covers the box spring and the space beneath the bed in its entirety, you will actually need to take the mattress off the bed. In doing so, you can ensure an accurate measurement. When you measure, keep in mind you are looking for the width, length AND the drop which is measured from the top of your box spring to the floor. If you shortcut this step by keeping the mattress on the bed while measuring, you risk erroneous measurements and will more than likely wind up having to do your whole project over.
