Here is yet another destination for some funky and artistic fabric prints: a cool hexagon-inspired fabric placemat! This craft is step-by-step, so pick out your fabrics from J&O today and get started! These make wonderful house-warming gifts, so be sure to create a few sets!
You will need: (per placemat!)
- Background fabric ½ yard
- Flannel for batting ¼ yard
- Decorative fabrics ½ yard (pattern should repeat nicely in a 4” x 4” area!)
- Coordinating thread (or a cool contrasting shade)
- Sewing machine with walking foot
- Download template
This video shows how to sew the hexagons together properly.
What to do:
- See video to make your hexagons and sew them together.
- Making the mat. Cut out three 12” x 16” pieces of fabric. 2 from the background fabric and one from the flannel batting. Note: the flannel does not need to match, it will not be seen!
- Layer with the flannel between the 2 pieces of backing fabric.
- Place the hexagon piece on the top of this stack and center it. Pin into place.
- Sew along each of the seam lines where the hexagons were stitched
- Now that the hexagon is in place, stitch 1/4” away from the edge of them, this will create a quilted-effect. Repeat this every ¼” until the background is covered with chevron stitching.
- Finally, bind the placemat. This step is optional.
