I’m so happy to be visiting the J & O Fabrics blog today. To share a little bit about myself . . . After working for the Mayor of Nashville for several years, my childhood love of art was rekindled when I went to the store to purchase art supplies as a stress reliever. Two years later, I took a step of faith and launched a collection of note cards at a stationery show in New York. A week later, my designs were being presented to Target where they would eventually appear on a variety of paper products found not only on the shelves of Target, but of Barnes and Nobles and several boutiques as well.
Fast forward to last year …
My work would lead me to a position with Robert Kaufman Fabrics. Entering into the fabric world is a dream come true. I used to sketch out designs for children’s clothes when I was nine years old. Even then, polka dots and stripes were a favorite of mine. So, designing children’s fabric is really awesome. One of my first fabric collections was Remix. This collection is so close to my heart, as I feel it best represents my design style . . . bright and bold colors, with simple and fun designs. When I first received my samples in the mail, it was such a happy day. I fell in love with this fabric line and I immediately wanted to sew something. The only problem was that I had never sat behind a sewing machine in my life. So, I decided to learn. I have been chronicling learning to sew on my blog. My first sewing project was a pillow. It was the easiest of them all. My latest sewing project is Christmas ornaments. I’ll be honest, this sewing project was a bit tricky. (Okay, okay, with the exception of pillows, I’ve thought all of my sewing projects were tricky). Anyhow, I knew I wanted circular ornaments. At first I did a three dimensional ornament by sewing together small wedges, but I didn’t like that the fabric design wasn’t seamless. Then I tried another type of round ornament. After many other attempts, I decided to go with a flat ornament with raw edges. Simple . . . well, kinda. Cutting the fabric was the easiest part, sewing in a circle was a bit harder. In the end, I think the ornaments turned out cute. The tree is simple and sweet. And it makes me smile.
