With the infamous sighting of the groundhogs shadow predicting another six weeks of winter still left to go, the desire for all things warm and cozy is still in demand. Luckily for those on the hunt, there is a wide array of wonderful fleece material in popular NFL teams, novelty prints, notable characters and solids still stocking the shelves of local fabric stores to wet your whistle and please your creative sewing palate. From apparel and accessories to no-sew-fleece-throws, pillows, and crafty makings, fleece offers a lightweight warmth combined with the kind of ease-of-care that those who seek during the wintry months enjoy year after year.
But fleece can refer to a wide variety of fabric. Even though all fleece is knit, it can be made of a cotton/polyester blend like what you find on sweats, to 100% polyester like what you find on plush outer wear. There are some that are made from recycled and eco-friendly materials with one or two brushed sides as well. In addition, some are extra thick, while others are less plush.
With so many different labels attached to this magical material, sometimes just what kind of fleece we are searching for can be confusing to say the least. Below we identified a few common (and not so common) types of fleece, a brief description of each, and the kind of projects they may work well with.
