This past weekend marked the 90th Anniversary of the Oscar’s , a night set aside each year to recognize excellence in cinematic achievements within the American film industry. However, for many fashionistas, designers and viewers worldwide, it is the night of the red carpet fashion parade. For fashion watchers this time, it was the night Rita Moreno turned the Oscar’s red carpet green.
As in years past, there often unfolds a seemingly unintentional color palate or design concept that becomes the fashion theme for the night. Whether it is black and form fitting or low plunging necklines and open backs, which fashion trends take center stage is always an anticipation and highlight.
At the LA awards Sunday night, we saw actors and actresses donned in a patriotic display of bold blues, rich reds, stand-out whites, and the sparkles of fireworks from such designers as Armani Prive, Michael Kors, Versace, Giorgio Armani, and Calvin Klein. Silk crepe, chiffon, velvet, and embroidered sequins adorned frames of all colors and sizes as fabrics strutted and shimmed down the red carpet runway commanding attention and causing a stir. But the fashion statement that was felt most by J&O Fabrics and critics alike, was the recycled 1962 Pitoy Moreno original designed specifically for Rita Moreno over 50 years ago to accept her Academy Award for West Side Story.
Proving that fashion never goes out of style, Rita turned her red carpet gown green by having the heavily brocaded dress made of special Japanese ‘obi’ kimono fabric with black bateau bodice updated and reconstructed into a strapless top instead of the original Sabrina cut. The black ballooned skirt with gold floral print and poppy red accents was left unaltered and in amazing condition inspiring the growing Eco-fashion movement in style!
Our pick for the Oscar’s red carpet fashion…Rita’s ‘go-green’ decision. We’re looking forward to seeing more examples of recycled fashions as future award celebrations come back around again.
