Viva Frida Fabric is a textile homage to the prominent
Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Her series of famous self-portraits and other works
have garnered her international attention and secured her posthumous reputation
as one of Mexico's greatest artists.
Viva Frida Fabric incorporates elements of her culture
without making explicit references to her paintings. This imaginative design by
Phillip de León depicts a stylized portrait of her with the words "Viva Frida"
within a frame of thorns. The print includes plants and flowers that Frida Kahlo
would have known, especially cactuses. In the background is a modest hacienda,
perhaps meant to represent her home in Coyoacán, México. The background is a
light tea dye color.
Other elements reminiscent of her work are hands gathering
flowers, hearts wrapped in thorns and melons with faces. Underneath the hands
gathering flowers are two doves holding a banner which in Spanish reads "Abrazo
de amor del universo" (English: Embrace of universal love). Underneath
the hearts flies a banner with the following words: "Te amo mucho" (English:
I love you very much). There are other words printed throughout the fabric,
"Ya no estoy sola" - I am no longer alone
"Nada vale más que la risa y el desprecio" - Nothing is
more valuable than laughter and scorn
"En un sueño viviremos los dos - los dos" - In a dream we
two shall live - we two
"Amor, calor, dolor, dador, amor" - Love, warmth, pain, a
