The Miami Dolphins were founded by Joseph Robbie and Danny Thomas in 1965 as part of the AFL. During its first four seasons, the team compiled a record of 15-39-2. The team's fortunes began to change when it hired Don Shula away from the Baltimore Colts as head coach in 1970. Shula's hiring produced immediate dividends as in his first year as coach the Dolphins finished 10-4 and made their first trip to the playoffs.

The following season cemented the Dolphins' status as one of the premier teams in the NFL, as the Dolphins made a run to Super Bowl VI, which they lost 24-3 to the Dallas Cowboys. This would be only the first of three consecutive trips to the Super Bowl, with the Dolphins emerging victorious in two.

In 1972, the Dolphins became the first team after the AFL-NFL merger to go undefeated throughout an entire season, culminating in a 14-7 defeat of the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII.

The following season, the Dolphins wrapped up the regular season with a 12-2 record before going on to win a second consecutive Super Bowl against the Minnesota Vikings. The final of the game was 24-7.

The Dolphins returned to the Super Bowl in 1983, but were defeated by the Redskins 27-17. In the ensuing draft the Dolphins selected quarterback Dan Marino out of the University of Pittsburgh. In his second season, Marino led the Dolphins to Super Bowl XIX, which they lost 38-16 to the San Francisco 49ers.

Though the Dolphins have not appeared in another Super Bowl since then, they did return to the Conference Championship game twice, first losing to the New England Patriots in 1985, then to the Buffalo Bills in 1992.
