The Cincinnati Bengals franchise was formed in 1968 in the
last years of the AFL. The team's first owner was Paul Brown, the legendary
coach that had formerly been with the Cleveland Browns. Brown coached the team
for its first three seasons. When the AFL merged with the NFL in 1970, the
Bengals became a part of the expanded league.
The Bengals fielded competitive squads throughout the 1970s
but only made the playoffs three times. Unfortunately for Cincinnati, in the
1970s the AFC was dominated by the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Oakland Raiders.
The 1980s were a much stronger decade for the Bengals, as the
team was established as one of the best in the AFC. The Bengals made it as far
as the Super Bowl twice in the decade, losing both times to the San Francisco
49ers. In the Bengals' first trip to the Super Bowl in 1982 they lost 26-21. The
Bengals returned in 1989, this time losing 20-16 to the 49ers.
Following the 1990 season, the Bengals suffered through 14
straight seasons without a winning record. Since 1991 the Bengals have made the
playoffs only once (in 2005), yet have recently become a more competitive team
with the addition of such talented players as quarterback Carson Palmer and wide
receiver Chad Johnson.
