Philadelphia Eagles NFL Fleece: Allover

By the end of the 1940s, the Eagles fortunes had improved dramatically, as the team appeared in three consecutive NFL Championship games. Out of these, the Eagles won two, including consecutive shutouts of the Chicago Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams in 1948 and 1949 respectively. To date, the Eagles are the only team to have ever won back to back championships by shutout. The Eagles of these years were led by head coach Earle "Greasy" Neal and star running back Steve van Buren.

The Eagles own the distinction of being the only team to ever defeat Vince Lombardi and his vaunted Green Bay Packers in the playoffs. This was on the occasion of the Eagles' third NFL Championship in 1960, when they defeated the Packers 17-13. Future Hall of Famers Norm van Brocklin, Chuck Bednarik and Tommy McDonald were the Eagles' stars at the time.

After the championship season, the Eagles had only one winning season until 1975. In 1976, Dick Vermeil was lured away from UCLA to coach the Eagles and he promptly helped the franchise become competitive. By 1981, the Eagles were once again in a championship game, this time Super Bowl XV, where they lost to the Oakland Raiders 27-10.

The late 1980s saw the arrival of coach Buddy Ryan and a rejuvenation of the team, particularly known for its fearsome defense. Unfortunately, the team did not capitalize on its potential and eventually many of its stars faded away or left to other teams.

For much of the 1990s, the Eagles fared poorly. With the hiring of Andy Reid as head coach in 1999 and the drafting of quarterback Donovan McNabb that same year, the Eagles had established the foundation of their success in the next decade. Under Reid and McNabb, the Eagles advanced to four consecutive NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl. In Super Bowl XXXIX, the Eagles lost to the New England Patriots 24-21.
