The Seattle Seahawks joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1976 along with the Tamp Bay Buccaneers. Since the franchise's inception it has formed part of both the AFC and NFC, and experienced success in both conferences. The Seahawks have won division titles six times: 1988 and 199 AFC West titles, and 2004-2007 NFC West titles. The Seahawks have also appeared in the championship games of both the AFC and NFC: 1983 in the AFC and 2005 in the NFC.
Seattle's greatest season came in 2005 when the team compiled a regular season record of 13-3. Once in the playoffs, the Seahawks first defeated the Washington Redskins 20-10, for the franchise's first playoff victory since 1984. In the conference championship game, the Seahawks defeated the Carolina Panthers 34-14. With that victory they earned a berth in Super Bowl XL, against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Although the game was hard fought, the Steelers prevailed 21-10.
