Since their founding, the New Orleans Saints have been a
perpetual underdog in the NFL. Although established in 1967, the Saints did not
finish a season with at least a .500 record until 1979. Finally, between 1987
and 1993 the Saints enjoyed seven consecutive seasons of finishing .500 or
better.
After many season of futility, the Saints won their first
playoff game against the St. Louis Rams in 2000, the Super Bowl champions the
previous season. The next week, however, the Saints were defeated in convincing
fashion by the Minnesota Vikings.
To date, the 2006 has been the best in team history. Although
the Saints have finished just 3-13 the previous season, the team was reenergized
for the 2006 campaign. After finishing the regular season with a 10-6 record,
the Saints enjoyed a first round bye in the playoffs. In their Divisional
Playoff game against the Eagles, the Saints won 27-24 to advance for the first
time in team history to the Conference Championship game. Although the game
against the Chicago Bears was close for the first three quarters, the Bears
eventually triumphed 39-14.
