As one of the founding franchises of the AFL, the Chargers
began playing in 1960 as the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chargers were one of the
better teams in the league, particularly known for their offense which boasted
such stars as quarterback John Hadl and wide receiver Lance Alworth. Throughout
the 1960s, the Chargers made a number of trips to the AFL Championship game.
The Chargers began to struggle when they were integrated into
the NFL. The 1970s were a mostly forgettable time for the franchise, when even
such legends as Deacon Jones and Johnny Unitas couldn't reverse the team's
decline.
By the end of the 1970's, however, the pieces were in place
for the Chargers' improvement. With quarterback Dan Fouts, wide receiver Charlie
Joiner and tight end Kellen Winslow, the Chargers offense once again became the
key to the team's success. Between 1979 and 1981, the Chargers won three
straight division titles and advanced as far as the AFC Championship game in
1981, where they lost to the Cincinnati Bengals 27-7.
The Chargers made their first trip to the Super Bowl in 1995,
where they lost to the San Francisco 49ers 49-21 in Super Bowl XXIX.
