The St. Louis Rams are one of the oldest franchises in the
NFL. The history of the Rams can be traced back to Cleveland in 1936, when the
team started play in the American Football League. The next year the Rams left
for the more established NFL. Although the team suspended operations in 1943 due
to World War II, the Rams resumed play in 1944. By 1945, they had won their
first NFL Championship, defeating the Washington Redskins 15-14.
In 1946 the Rams moved to Los Angeles, where they would
remain for the next five decades. The Rams made a successful transition to the
West Coast as they played in the 1949 and 1950 Championship games, and won the
1951 NFL Championship by defeating the Cleveland Browns 24-17. The Rams returned
to the Championship game in1955, only to lose to the Browns 38-14.
The late 1950s and early 1960s the Rams experienced many
struggles with mostly losing seasons. By the late 1960s, the Rams began to
improve and would remain one of the NFL's better teams throughout the 1970s.
Between 1974 and 1979, the Rams played in five NFC Championship games. They
finally won in 1979 by defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 9-0. In Super Bowl
XIV, the Rams lost 31-19 to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Rams advanced to the NFC Championship game twice during
the 1980s, but lost both games, first to the Chicago Bears in 1985, then to the
San Francisco 49ers in 1989. After the defeat to San Francisco, the Rams
wouldn't return to the playoffs for nine years.
Finally, under head coach Dick Vermeil the Rams began to
build the foundation for their first Super Bowl victory. Behind a superb offense
with quarterback Kurt Warner, running back Marshall Faulk, and wide receivers
Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce, the Rams finished the regular season 13-3. In Super
Bowl XXXIV, the Rams faced off against the Tennessee Titans in a relatively low
scoring showdown dominated by defense. The Rams prevailed in the end 23-16.
The Rams returned to the Super Bowl in 2002 for Super Bowl
XXVI. The favored Rams lost to the New England Patriots 20-17.
