Back in 1932 George
Preston Marshall founded the Boston "Football" Braves to compete in the
NFL. The team's seasons in Boston were uneventful, and with little fan
support the team - renamed the Redskins in 1933 - moved to Washington,
D.C. The highlight of these years was the team's appearance in the 1936
NFL Championship game, which they lost 21-6 to the Green Bay Packers.
The newly relocated Redskins returned to the Championship game in 1937,
this time with much better results as they defeated the Chicago Bears
28-21.
The Redskins and Bears played three more times for the title in the
ensuing years. The Bears struck in 1940 by annihilating the Redskins
73-0 in the most lopsided defeat in NFL history. The Bears received
their comeuppance two seasons later when they lost to the Redskins
14-6. The Redskins lost the rematch in 1943 by the score of 41-21.
In 1945 the Redskins played in their last Championship game for
decades, losing to the Cleveland Rams 15-14.
The Redskins' next championship game appearance came at the end of the
1972 season. After defeating the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship
game, the Redskins lost Super Bowl VII to the undefeated Miami Dolphins.
During the 1980s the Redskins once again became a dominant team. After
hiring Joe Gibbs as head coach in 1981. The Redskins made their second
Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl XVII against the Miami Dolphins;
this time the Redskins won 27-17.
The following season the Redskins again made the Super Bowl, this time
losing to the Los Angeles Raiders 38-9.
The Redskins won two more Super Bowls in 1988 and 1992. In 1988, Doug
Williams passed for four touchdowns in the second quarter of a 42-10
rout of the Denver Broncos. 1992 saw the Redskins defeat the Buffalo
Bills 37-24 in Super Bowl XXVI.
