Along with the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers, the Oakland Raiders stood as one of the dominant teams of the 1970s. The Raiders' success can be traced further back to its time as a founding member of the AFL, where they won one championship and three division titles. The Raiders' AFL Championship in 1967 propelled the team to a match-up with the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl II, where the Packers won 33-14.

In 1969, John Madden was hired as coach. He led the team to six division titles and four appearances in the AFC Championship game. Frustration mounted, however, as the Raiders were unable to overcome the Dolphins and  Steelers, losing three straight championship games to them. The Raiders finally broke through in 1976 with a 24-7 victory over Pittsburgh en route to a birth in Super Bowl XI. The Raiders' opponents were the formidable Minnesota Vikings, but the Raiders prevailed 32-14.

The Raiders again appeared in the Super Bowl at the end of the 1980 season. Behind the play of quarterback Jim Plunkett, the Raiders advanced through the playoffs to a showdown with the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XV. Led by a defense which recorded three interceptions during the game, the Raiders won 27-10.

The Raiders again advanced to the Super Bowl at the end of the 1982 season. In Super Bowl XVIII, the now Los Angeles Raiders jumped to an early lead and ultimately trounced the Washington Redskins 38-9.
