The New York Jets will always be associated with Super Bowl
III, and quarterback Joe Namath's bold prediction that his team would beat the
favored Baltimore Colts. At the time, the Jets were part of the AFL, which was
considered to be inferior to the NFL of the Colts. Nevertheless, the Jets backed
up Namath's prediction with a 16-7 victory.
Although the Jets' history seems to begin with that seminal
victory, they had already been an established franchise for a number of years
and was one of the founding members of the AFL. Despite the franchise's early
difficulties, these were put to rest with the aforementioned Super Bowl victory
which brought the Jets and the AFL legitimacy.
The Jets' seasons following Super Bowl III didn't prove to be
quite the anticipated denouement to their fairy tale 1969 season. For most of
the 1970s, the Jets struggled, to the point that Namath was waived following the
1976 season.
The 1980s had better moments for the franchise, particularly
the play of its defensive line dubbed the "New York Sack Exchange". During the
1980s the Jets made trips to the playoffs in 1981, 1982, 1985 and 1986.
After some forgettable seasons to close out the 1980s and
begin the 1990s, the Jets experienced a resurgence under coach Bills Parcells.
Under Parcells, the Jets advanced as far as the AFC Championship game in 1998,
where they lost to eventual Super Bowl champions the Denver Broncos.
Since then, the Jets have experienced successes intermingled
with failures as they continue to compete in the AFC East, home to the New
England Patriots, Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills.
