The Detroit Pistons were founded
The Detroit Pistons were founded as the Fort Wayne Zollner
Pistons. In 1948 the name was changed simply to Fort Wayne Pistons. Eventually,
in 1947 the team was moved to Detroit where it has remained ever since.
From the beginning the Pistons were a competitive team,
appearing in the playoffs 14 times in the 16 season between 1949 and 1963. In
1955 and 1956 the Pistons made it to the Finals, where they lost first to the
Syracuse Nationals of Dolph Schayes then to the Philadelphia Warriors of George
Yardley.
From 1964 to 1983 the Pistons struggled to make the playoffs,
appearing in the playoffs only 5 times in those 20 seasons. Throughout the
1980's the Pistons began acquiring the pieces that would put the among the elite
teams in the NBA. The careful building process culminated in three straight
trips to the NBA Finals from 1988-90, including back to back championships in
1989 and 1990. The key Pistons players during the years when they were known as
the "Bad Boys" included Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Bill Laimbeer, John Salley,
Rick Mahorn, Dennis Rodman, James Edwards, Vinnie Johnson and Mark Aguirre.
In 2005 and 2006, the Pistons made it back to the Finals,
first defeating the favored Los Angeles Lakers of Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe
Bryant in 5 games, then losing in 7 to the San Antonio Spurs of Tim Duncan.
