The Cavaliers were preceded in Cleveland by the Rebels, a
team of the Basketball Association of America that folded following the 1947
season. Over 20 years would pass until the Cavaliers started play in 1970 as an
NBA expansion team.
Although their early history was dotted with some successes -
such as an appearance in the 1976 Eastern Conference Finals - the late 1980's
finally saw the Cavaliers become one of the consistently better teams in the
NBA. Starting in 1988, the Cavaliers would make the playoffs in 9 out of the
next 11 years, including their second trip to date to the Eastern Conference
Finals where they lost in 6 games to Michael Jordan and the Bulls.
Expectations for the future of the Cleveland Cavaliers have
been high ever since drafting Lebron James straight out of high school in 2003.
In his third and fourth seasons he led the Cavaliers to 50 wins and the playoffs
and has become one of the most recognizable names in all of sports.
