The Toronto Raptors were established in 1993, becoming the
first professional Toronto basketball team since the Toronto Huskies of the BAA
in 1947. The Raptors were established the same year as another Canadian
expansion team: the Vancouver Grizzlies. Both teams started playing in 1996, but
the Raptors made the playoff well before the Grizzlies.
In 1998, the Raptors selected with the 5th pick the player
who would have the greatest impact on their team: Vince Carter, from the
University of North Carolina. Carter would lead the Raptors to the playoffs
three times in his first four seasons, with the highlight being a thrilling
seven game semifinals series in 2001 against league MVP Allen Iverson and the
Philadelphia 76ers.
