The Philadelphia 76ers originate
The Philadelphia 76ers originated in 1939 as an independent
professional basketball team called the Syracuse Nationals. After the
Philadelphia Warriors moved to San Francisco in 1962, the Nationals moved to
Philadelphia in 1963 and changed their name to the 76ers.
In Syracuse, the Nationals had some success, appearing in the
Finals in 1950, 1954 and 1955, and winning it all in 1955 with Dolph Schayes.
After moving to Philadelphia and becoming the Sixers, they
struck gold with the acquisition of of Wilt Chamberlain during the 1964-65
season. During the 1966-67 season, the Sixers gathered a team that was voted the
greatest of all time during the NBA's 35th anniversary celebration and is still
considered one of the greatest - if not the greatest - team to ever step on the
hardwood. With a lineup of Wilt Chamberlain, Billy Cunningham, Hal Greer, Chet
Walker, Lucious Jackson and Wali Jones, the Sixers jumped out to a 46-4 record
and finished the season at 68-13. They then defeated the San Francisco Warriors
of Rick Barry and Nate Thurmond in six games in the Finals.
The Sixers would make it back to the NBA Finals in 1977 with
Julius Erving, George McGinnis, World B. Free and Doug Collins. They lost in six
games to the Portland Trailblazers of Bill Walton. The Sixers lost two more
Finals in 1980 and 1982, both times to the Los Angeles Lakers.
With a team centered around Allen Iverson, the Sixers made it
back to the Finals in 2001 where they fell once again to the Lakers, now guided
by Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and coach Phil Jackson.
