Along with the Boston Celtics
Since 1946 the New York Knicks have been playing on one of
basketball's biggest stages: the Madison Square Garden. Along with the Boston Celtics, the New York Knicks are one of only two teams
still located in its original city. They have also been one of the more
successful franchises in the NBA.
From the very beginning the Knicks were successful, engaging
in postseason play from the 1946-47 through 1952-53 seasons. The also played in
three straight championship series. In 1951, Hall of Famer Harry Gallatin led
the Knicks to the Finals where they lost to the Rochester Royals, led by future
Hall of Famers Bob Davies and Arnie Risen. In 1952, they lost to a Minneapolis
Lakers team that boasted future Hall of Famers George Mikan, Vern Mikkelsen,
Slater Martin and Jim Pollard as members. In 1953 they again lost to a strong
Minneapolis Lakers team.
The Knicks wouldn't make it back to the Finals until the
1969-70 season, when they beat the Los Angeles Lakers in 7 games. The Knicks of
1970 were led by Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, Dick Barnett, Dave DeBusschere, Bill
Bradley and Cazzie Russell. The Lakers team they defeated was led by Elgin
Baylor, Jerry West and Happy Hairston. The 1972 Knicks had another strong team
with Earl Monroe and Jerry Lucas having been added since 1970, however, they
lost in the Finals to a great Lakers team of Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West and
Gail Goodrich. The Knicks returned to the Finals the following season and for
the third time in four years squared off against the Lakers, winning the series
in 5 games.
