The New Jersey Nets were one of the teams that made the
transition for the ABA to the NBA in the 1970's. During the 1970's the Nets had
such superstars as Rick Barry and Julius Erving play for them. After the Nets
lost to George McGinnis and the Indiana Pacers in the 1972 ABA Finals, Barry
returned to the NBA. With Erving, however, they returned to and won the Finals
in 1974 over the Utah Stars. They also won the last ABA Championship in 1976 by
defeating David Thompson, Dan Issel and their Denver Nuggets.
The New Jersey Nets wouldn't return to the a championship
series until they made consecutive trips in 2002 and 2003 with teams led by
Jason Kidd and Kenyon Martin. In 2002 they lost to Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant
and the Los Angeles Lakers. The Nets were defeated by Tim Duncan and the San
Antonio Spurs in 2003.
The New Jersey Nets compete in the Eastern Conference's
Atlantic Division along with the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, Philadelphia
76ers and Toronto Raptors.
