The origins of the Atlanta Hawks
The origins of the Atlanta Hawks go way back to to 1946 when
they were formed as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks of the NBL. From 1952 through 1955
they were named the Milwaukee Hawks. The Hawks relocated to St. Louis in 1956
and remained there until 1968. Finally, in 1969 they established themselves in
Atlanta where they remain.
In the first season after the NBL and BAA merged to form the
NBA - 1949-50 -, the Tri-Cities Blackhawks made the playoffs under the guidance
of Red Auerbach, who would go on to become the legendary coach of the Boston
Celtics. In 1954 the Hawks drafted Bob Pettit out of LSU with the 2nd pick in
the draft and by the next year were back in the postseason after a 5 year
absence. In 1957 they challenged for their first NBA title but fell in 7 games
to Bill Russell and the Boston Celtics.
In 1958, Bob Pettit, Cliff Hagan, Slater Martin and Easy Ed
MacAuley led the Hawks to their first and only NBA Finals title with a 6 game victory over the Celtics.
The Hawks made it back to the Finals in 1960 and 1961, each time losing to the
Boston Celtics.
The 1950's and 1960's were a very successful time in the
history of the franchise as they made the playoffs 17 times in the 18 seasons
between 1956 and 1973. During this time the Hawks had some of their franchise's
brightest stars: Bob Pettit, Zelmo Beatty, Cliff Hagan, Richie Guerin and Lenny
Wilkens.
The 21 seasons between 1978 and 1999 saw the Hawks make it to
the playoffs 18 times, led by such stars as Dominique Wilkins, Eddie Johnson,
Dan Roundfield, Kevin Willis, Steve Smith and Dikembe Mutombo.
